Compare the performance and application of 3D structured light and ToF sensor

Comparing the principles and systems of 3D structured light and Tof sensor, the performance and application scenarios of the two solutions can be further analyzed.

1) From the measurement distance and measurement accuracy analysis:
3D structured light measurement range is short (0.2m-1.2m), high-precision (currently up to 1280*800) scenes, including Face ID (face recognition), industrial automatic optical inspection (AOI) and other applications.

Tof sensor has a long measuring distance range (currently 0.4m-5m, which can be further increased to within 10m). The measurement accuracy of the ToF solution is determined by the measuring distance and the resolution and field of view of the tof sensor at the receiving end. Under certain conditions of measuring distance and angle of view, higher tof sensor resolution, more measurement accuracy. Be widely used in many applications such as intelligent door lock , obstacle avoidance, navigation, and people counting applications.

Short measuring distance of the 3D structured light is determined by its measuring principle, which is difficult to improve. Because the structured light has speckles or coding patterns, blur or brightness attenuation will appear as the distance increases, resulting in incomplete depth maps, holes, or even failure, and the measurement accuracy will be sharp beyond 1.2m It can’t be used in the rear of the phone. Tof sensor emits surface light source, and the light information will not be attenuated a lot within a certain distance, so the measurement range is larger.
