3D ToF Sensor FAQ

Find answers to common questions about DOMI ToF sensors, products, and services.

What is a Time‑of‑Flight (ToF) sensor and how does it work?
ToF emits modulated infrared light and measures round‑trip time or phase shift per pixel to compute distance, producing a depth map. Phase ToF suits short‑to‑mid range; pulsed ToF supports longer ranges.
How does ToF compare to structured light or stereo?
Pros: robust on low‑texture scenes, low latency, low compute, works in low light. Cons: direct sunlight reduces SNR; transparent or specular surfaces cause multipath/penetration—mitigate via algorithms and optical design.
What determines range and accuracy?
Emitter power, optics/FOV, integration time vs. frame rate, modulation frequency, sensor noise, target reflectance, and ambient light. Near ranges are typically more accurate; multi‑frequency/exposure and thermal calibration improve stability.
Does outdoor use suffer from ambient light? How to mitigate?
Strong sunlight lowers SNR. Mitigation: narrow‑band filters, higher modulation frequency, HDR/multi‑exposure, temperature and multipath calibration, and improved shielding/optical path design.
How do I integrate ToF data into my system?
Typical outputs include depth map, amplitude image, and point cloud; interfaces via I2C/SPI/MIPI or USB; the SDK provides denoising, thermal calibration, and point‑cloud/SLAM APIs for easy integration in robots, AR, and security systems.
