What is the difference between 3D face detection and 2D face detection?

3D face feature extraction and 2D+ face feature extraction are two different processes. 3D face feature extraction processes 3D data, such as point clouds, voxels, etc. These data are complete and three-dimensional, while 2D+ face feature extraction divides 3D face data into 2D RGB data + depth data , The processing method is to first extract the features of the RGB data using the 2D face feature extraction method, and then process the depth data.
3D face recognition has the potential to achieve better accuracy than its 2D counterpart by measuring geometry of rigid features on the face. This avoids such pitfalls of 2D face recognition algorithms as change in lighting, different facial expressions, make-up and head orientation.
